WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND
A CHUNKY CARDIGAN
THE CATWALK CARDI
I WILL admit that the cardigan is not something you immediately associate with the great and the good of planet fashion — but your grandmother’s favourite knitwear has been slowly growing in popularity.
Believe it or not, the buttondown was big news on the catwalks with Isabel Marant, Loewe and Chloe (to name but a few) sending a variety of options down their runways.
NOW WITH SEX APPEAL
AND they are a hit with celebs too. Katie Holmes managed to make hers sexy by letting her oversized grey knit drop off the shoulder to reveal a colourco-ordinating lace bra.
Kaia Gerber, 18-year-old daughter of Cindy Crawford who, well, let’s just say takes after her mother, wears a lightweight cardi with a floral print midi skirt, unbuttoned just enough to see a bit of belly button.
It’s a rare midriff that can handle this sort of exposure (and my belly is staying firmly under wraps) but the point is that a cardigan can now be risqué — which has certainly added to its appeal.
ONE IN EVERY SHAPE
THE beauty of a cardigan is that any shape or size works, depending on what you want out of it. The ‘coat-igan’ (which is on a list of words I will never say and had hoped never to write) works brilliantly as outerwear.
You can pair a fitted, prim number with a skirt for a bourgeois effect. My favourite of all is a short but chunky-ish knit like the one I’m wearing here (€102, Whistles).
It looks great with jeans, especially tucked into a highwaisted pair.
