CRAFTY BUSINESS TAKES OVER ONCE MORE...

- JUSTINE ELUDO

IF you’re in the business of arts and crafts, listen up. There’s never been a better time to showcase independent brands with a homemade/artisan ethos, as more people tire of meaningless purchases with little sentimental value. There’s the carbon footprint argument too, as the Greta effect influences us to become more thoughtful with our purchases. If you want to become more eco-concious, supporting local brands rather than products that have to be shipped halfway across the world is a good place to start.

Brands with sustainability and integrity are indeed big business, and Showcase Ireland is evidence of this. The creative expo has become something of an institution for Irish arts and crafts, and in its 44th year, is now bigger and brighter than ever. It highlights indigenous brands in the huge global market, and exposes trailblazers setting trends in Ireland’s creative industry.

Orders generated over the four days of the 2019 show were €25.1m, equating to an annualised sales level of €159.2m and another strong year is expected for 2020, with over 400 brands including 50 debuts at the showcase this year. Highlights include the launch of Só, a new inspirational short film directed by Irish photographer, Boo George, in collaboration with fashion director Paula Hughes, that creates awareness and appreciation of Irish-made textiles, accessories and apparel.

Products are also specially arranged by product category to make it easier and organised for attendees.

At a glance, some exhibitors sure to catch attention include Aran Woolen Mills (the new name for what was Carraig Donn manufacturing) with their gorgeous knits from Westport, and Bernie Murphy’s contemporary take on traditional Donegal tweed is captivating.

Inis Fragrances will be showcasing their sparkling signature Energy Of The Sea collection, and Copperfish, which uses salvaged wood and retro bulbs to create stunning lighting, is a brand that deserves widespread recognition.

Another major draw is the Local Enterprise Showcase, which will occupy the balcony of the Main Hall at the RDS, and features emerging businesses from across the country. Showcase 2020 runs from Sunday, 19th to Wednesday 22nd January 2020 and is for trade attendance only. Visit showcaseireland.com
