‘SUPER SATURDAY’ IN OCTOBER

- By WILL KELLEHER

THE Six Nations clash between Wales and Scotland was called off due to coronavirus chaos — barely hours after the Welsh Rugby Union insisted the match would be played. In a shambolic development yesterday afternoon, the match, which some claimed would be the biggest gathering of people in the world today, was postponed while Scotland were warming up for their captain’s run. At 9.30am yesterday, a WRU statement read: ‘The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed that tomorrow’s Six Nations clash with Scotland will go ahead as planned.’

Sportsmail understands that after the boards met during the day, they decided to belatedly postpone the game, similar to most other sport that had been scheduled this weekend. At 2pm, a new WRU statement confirmed they had decided to cancel the game. It read: ‘We have decided that it is in the best interests of supporters, players and staff to fall in line with recent measures taken across the UK. Given the fluid and unprecedented nature of this issue, a postponement became the only viable option.’ Scotland skipper Stuart Hogg was due to address the media at 3pm — but the game was called off just an hour before that. While there is no set date yet for the final weekend of fixtures in the tournament to take place, it seems likely that Wales v Scotland will join Italy v England and France v Ireland in being played on October 31. In that scenario, the Six Nations will have a ‘Super Saturday’ finale. Elsewhere in rugby, Wales and Scotland’s Under 20s sides played each other in Colwyn Bay, behind closed doors. The English Premiership Rugby Cup final between Sale and Harlequins in Manchester tomorrow is also off due to coronavirus.
