Minister hails Garda ‘legends’ as just brilliant

- By Ronan Smyth

FROM grocery shopping to walking people’s dogs, community policing units around the country have been helping vulnerable people through the crisis.

The gardaí’s efforts over the last few days have been warmly welcomed with Health Minister Simon Harris calling them ‘legends’.

The Garda Info Twitter account is keeping track of officers’ aid to the elderly and infirm in recent days.

Gardaí have been delivering Meals on Wheels to the elderly in Waterford city while their colleagues help delivery medical supplies.

Meanwhile, officers in Cabra Garda station in Dublin did some grocery shopping for people across their district.

They tweeted: ‘Community policing at its best by members of the Cabra Garda Station.

‘Grocery and pharmacy shopping being carried out for elderly and vulnerable people across their district. We are here to help.’

The Minister responded: ‘Legends. Just brilliant. Ireland at its best. Thank you An Garda Síochána. All in this together and we will get through this coronavirus.’

Garda Conor McNulty in Sligo took a guide dog named Rhum for a walk, giving him some vital exercise while his owner had to self-isolate.

Community policing units have also been liaising with pharmacies across the country to get much needed medicines to where they are needed.

Last week, 319 Garda recruits were sworn in as an emergency measure in order to get them helping communities as soon as possible.

Space in the Garda College has also been offered to the HSE to help relieve the strain in hospitals if required.
