You can bank on Meath residents to help fix food problems

- RONAN SMYTH

HThe food bank told its followers on Facebook that it could no longer accept drop-offs but said that anyone who still wanted to help could think about sending vouchers instead.

Ashling Lowe, who chairs the food bank, said: ‘We can’t have anybody coming to the offices, it’s just too dangerous at the present time. We do rely on general public donations so our only other option for people who still want to support the group, and help us carry out our duties, was for them to post vouchers for Lidl and SuperValu through to the office.’

Ms Lowe added that they received €250 in vouchers in the first few days. A hardware store in Trim then decided to donate another €200 in vouchers to a local supermarket.

IN addition, a butcher’s, also in Trim, said it would give €100 worth of meat to the food bank for families around the county.

‘We’ve stocked up our fridges and our freezers yesterday, so that will help us for another couple of days,’ Ms Lowe added.

‘It’s been good. People around Meath are pulling together. It’s not too bad at present but it will probably get hairy.’

‘I have fabulous volunteers who refuse to stand down, they will still do deliveries. I do have a few stubborn people, but stubborn in a very nice way, that will still continue to do the drops.’

Ms Lowe said one thing that is making her job more difficult is that people are panic-buying, especially baby products, but thankfully the community is pulling together.

‘It’s been so trying, it’s been so hard on the food bank, the panic buying. Now, thankfully, the community came together and that is where we were able to help so many people,’ she said.

‘I never ever doubt for one second the kindness of the people in Co. Meath; they are phenomenal.’ UNDREDS of euro worth of grocery vouchers have been donated to the Meath Food Bank after it said it could no longer accept drop-off donations owing to coronavirus concerns.
