Gone with the wind in Dublin
THOUSANDS of homes were left without power yesterday evening as an ‘unusual and unseasonal’ storm battered every part of the country.
One woman was injured on the northside of Dublin city as a tree came down and hit her car yesterday morning. The incident occurred on Clonliffe Road, in the shadow of Croke Park, shortly before 9am. Paramedics brought her to hospital, where she was said to be ‘in shock’ but not seriously injured.

‘The damage is mainly attributed to trees, now in full leaf, causing damage in the high winds,’ ESB Networks said in a statement. It said it had hoped to have power restored to all affected customers by late last night, including a large fault that was affecting Milford and surrounding areas in north Donegal.
Fallen trees also caused traffic disruptions in parts of the country, including on the N2 in Monaghan, just outside the village of Emyvale, and on the Athboy to Trim road in Co. Meath.
Meanwhile, in Galway city, St Helen’s Street was closed after a chimney collapsed at the old Connacht Laundry site. Fortunately, nobody was injured.
Met Éireann put a Status Yellow wind warning in place for the entire country yesterday morning after it had been initially issued for only western seaboard counties on Thursday evening.
Met Éireann expects that today will be calmer across the country, but still blustery with showers in all places.
