MOTHER KILLED... SWORD FOUND AT HOUSE

- By Ali Bracken Crime Correspondent ali.bracken@dailymail.ie

GARDAÍ have begun a murder investigation after a mother was found dead in her home in Dublin yesterday morning.

The married woman, who was 57, was attacked in the house in Willow Wood Grove in Hartstown, Blanchardstown, yesterday morning.

A 60-year-old man was arrested and is being detained at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

It is understood that he knew the victim.

The woman, who has been named as Jean Eagers, was attacked in her home at around 11.30am.

It is understood that several weapons, including a samurai sword and a meat cleaver, may have been used.

Yesterday, armed gardaí forced their way into the property, after a man had barricaded himself inside and a stand-off ensued before the windows were smashed and gardaí gained entry after throwing in flash grenades. Mrs Eagers had recently posted an image of her and her husband celebrating at a wedding. She had captioned it: ‘Happy New Year – 2020.’

It is believed her son, who is aged in his 20s, was in the house at the time and may have witnessed at least part of the attack, before running to a neighbour’s house for help.

While the investigation would not be upgraded to a murder inquiry until after the postmortem was completed, all the resources of a murder investigation were committed to the case.

The deceased is originally from west Dublin and has worked in retail.

Mrs Eagers’ body was taken to the City Morgue, where a postmortem examination was due to be carried out this morning.

The victim was the mother of two children, both believed to be aged in their 20s.

The detention period for the man arrested was suspended for a time while he was taken to

Connolly Hospital for treatment for injuries. Gardaí are treating the man in custody as the chief suspect and are not looking for anyone else at this time.

A Garda spokesperson said last night: ‘Gardaí in Blanchardstown are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a 57-year-old woman following an incident in a house in Hartstown on Sunday, 21st June 2020.

‘At approximately 11.30am, gardaí attended the scene of an incident at a house on Willow

Wood Grove, Hartstown, where a 57-year-old woman was discovered with serious injuries.

‘The injured woman was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel but was pronounced dead a short time later. A 60-year-old man was arrested at the scene.’

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Blanchardstown Garda Station, 01 666 7000, or the Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666 111.
