United future is bright, says Matic after he signs to 2023

- By CHRIS WHEELER

NEMANJA MATIC has signed a new contract at Manchester United until 2023. The 31-year-old Serbia midfielder was set to become a free agent this summer, but United triggered a 12-month extension clause in March and confirmed yesterday that he has agreed terms over a new deal. Matic, a £40million signing from Chelsea in 2017, had been linked with a move to Italy or the US. But he has produced some of his best form for a resurgent United in recent weeks and believes the club are on the verge of something special under Ole Gunner Solskjaer. ‘I think it’s the best moment since I came here,’ said Matic (right). ‘I hope we can still improve and bring a lot of success to this club. ‘We have a young team but we have a few experienced players who try to help the young ones to improve. I think we have a perfect mix of players and that can help us in the future, for sure. You can see in the last few games that we’ve got a belief that we are going to win.’ United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: ‘I am delighted that Nemanja has signed a new contract. I know his experience, professionalism and leadership will be invaluable to this young talented group.’ Meanwhile, United goalkeeper Dean Henderson admits he faces a big decision over his future when his second loan spell at Sheffield United ends this month. The 23-year-old wants regular first-team football and knows his path at United is blocked by David de Gea. ‘I have to think about what’s best for me and so does the club,’ said Henderson. ‘No matter where I play next season, I think everyone agrees I need to play regularly. I have shown what level I am at, and can be on, this season.’
