Morgan and wife targeted by thieves at holiday villa
JEWELLERY given by Piers Morgan to his wife Celia Walden was among the items stolen by thieves who broke into their holiday villa on the French Riviera at dawn as the couple slept. Yesterday Ms Walden, 44, told of the terrifying moment the burglars crept into their bedroom on the last night of their summer break in Saint-Tropez. Ms Walden said she felt a ‘stomach-plummeting sense of violation’ at the actions of the ‘depraved and despicable, inhuman’ thieves, who are believed to have fled at the sound of her alarm clock. The journalist, who has been married to Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan, 55, since 2010, wrote in the Daily Telegraph: ‘My handbag was upside-down on the sofa, the box I keep my jewellery in lying empty beside it. And there was something else. ‘I was the first up, but the air felt different, as though something or someone fast-moving and violent had passed through it. It felt like a room that had only recently been vacated.’ She felt sick on remembering that the handbag had been on a chair their bedroom. ‘They must have crept in there and stood inches away from us while we slept.’ Among the stolen items was an art deco ring Morgan bought her for their fifth wedding anniversary. ‘Every last piece I had with me was gone, none of it of great value, all of it irreplaceable,’ she said. ‘They are just things, but they’re also memories that have been trampled over.’
The incident happened early on Thursday, hours before the couple returned to the UK with their daughter Elise, eight, to avoid the 14-day quarantine restrictions that came in at the weekend.
Several celebrities have been targeted by thieves in SaintTropez, including Richard Hammond in 2018 and former F1 driver Jenson Button in 2015.
