Working with Polanski and Woody Allen? I don’t know what I was thinking, says Winslet

- By Dominique Hines

KATE Winslet was full of praise for Oscar-winning directors Woody Allen and Roman Polanski in 2017.

But three years is a long time in showbiz, and the actress says she now regrets working with them and asks herself: ‘What the f*** was I doing?’

Ms Winslet, 44, an Oscar-winner herself, was criticised for appearing in Allen’s 2017 film Wonder Wheel as he faced fresh accusations of abuse by his step-daughter Dylan Farrow, which he strongly denies.

She also starred in Carnage in 2011, directed by Polanski, 87, who in 1978 fled the US after pleading guilty to the rape of a 13-year-old girl. Looking back

Denies abuse: Woody Allen on her decision to appear in the films, she told Vanity Fair: ‘It’s like, what the f*** was I doing working with Woody Allen and Roman Polanski?

‘It’s unbelievable to me now how those men were held in such high regard so widely in the film industry and for as long as they were. It’s disgraceful.’ But in 2017, referring to the controversies around the two men, she told the New York Times: ‘Having thought it all through, you put it to one side and just work with the person. Woody Allen is an incredible director. So is Roman Polanski.

‘I had an extraordinary working experience with those men, and that’s the truth.’

She said her change of heart came after playing British palaeontologist Mary Anning in Ammonite, adding that the film ‘has made me really aware of being even more committed to honouring what women want to be saying for themselves in films.

‘I’d like to do my bit in having some proper integrity’.
