OUR CASH HASN’T ALL GONE TO THE DOGS
IN JUST two days, the public donated €2million to Dublin Zoo after it emerged the much-loved landmark was struggling to find the €500,000 needed to feed the animals each month. Like so many visitor attractions, it has been seriously hit by Covid restrictions, but few others face the daily running costs of a 70-acre site filled with animals of assorted dietary and veterinary needs. The public’s generosity will keep the poor animals fed till spring, and now the Government has chipped in an extra €1.6million. As it happens, that’s exactly the amount spent on the famous Dáil printer a year ago, the one that didn’t fit, and it’s a fraction of the €19.2million allocated to the greyhound industry in the recent budget, for the entertainment of a far smaller audience.
