WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND

THE SHARP COAT

- By Camilla Ridley-Day

INSTANT MOOD-BOOSTER

THERE’S no doubt what you wear directly affects your mood, and right now keeping your spirits up has never been more important.

For me, a tailored, hard-wearing coat worn on a walk blows the blues away — and unlike many other things, it feels like a justifiable purchase right now.

Trust me, smartening up your look by throwing on this impeccable outer layer will give you an instant confidence boost.

MAKE WOOLLIES SMART

GO FOR something fitted like the style I’m wearing here from Hush. You want to look streamlined and chic. Best of all, it will layer perfectly with your cosiest jumpers and loungewear — all the things you’re spending your days in at the moment.

Whereas thick layers underneath a puffer coat put you at risk of looking like a snowman, a chunky polo-neck under a tailored coat is always elegant. You can even add thermal underwear to keep cosy without ruining your outline. (My favourites are from Uniqlo, from £12.90, extra-thin and soft).

GO LONG

WHATEVER your height, choose a length well below the knee. As the Duchess of Cambridge demonstrated recently in her dramatic red coat from Massimo Dutti, this gives you a sweeping, sophisticated finish and is a practical choice for keeping warm, t oo. Double - breasted styles flatter by drawing the eye to the waist.

BUTTON UP

THERE are lots of ways to add interest; Hobbs’ military Bianca coat (below third from left) makes a statement with buttons, while wraparound, belted styles are always a good bet — try one in this season’s must-have colour, camel.

ADD knitwear in a matching tone for a truly polished combo
LOOK for strong, simple details such as these black buttons and pocket flaps
I LOVE patent leather boots for rainy, muddy days — they just wipe clean
I’VE kept things sleek and fitted with slim ‘toothpick’ jeans, but wide-leg would work well, too
