MAKE WOOLLIES SMART
GO FOR something fitted like the style I’m wearing here from Hush. You want to look streamlined and chic. Best of all, it will layer perfectly with your cosiest jumpers and loungewear — all the things you’re spending your days in at the moment.
Whereas thick layers underneath a puffer coat put you at risk of looking like a snowman, a chunky polo-neck under a tailored coat is always elegant. You can even add thermal underwear to keep cosy without ruining your outline. (My favourites are from Uniqlo, from £12.90, extra-thin and soft).
GO LONG
WHATEVER your height, choose a length well below the knee. As the Duchess of Cambridge demonstrated recently in her dramatic red coat from Massimo Dutti, this gives you a sweeping, sophisticated finish and is a practical choice for keeping warm, t oo. Double - breasted styles flatter by drawing the eye to the waist.
BUTTON UP
THERE are lots of ways to add interest; Hobbs’ military Bianca coat (below third from left) makes a statement with buttons, while wraparound, belted styles are always a good bet — try one in this season’s must-have colour, camel.
