APPEAL FOR FAMILY OF DUBAI CAR CRASH DAD

- By Lisa O’Donnell lisa.o’donnell@dailymail.ie

THE pregnant widow and young child of an Irish father killed in a Dubai road tragedy last month are in desperate need of support.

Limerickman Paul Carey had been living in the United Arab Emirates city with his wife Anna and their five-year-old son Fionn at the time.

A former Limerick hurler himself, Mr Carey is also uncle of Limerick hurling star Cian Lynch, the 2018 hurler of the year who is set to start for his country in the All-Ireland final on Sunday week, December 13.

With their second baby due in February, Paul and Anna had made the decision to return home for good before Christmas.

However, the tragic accident took place before they made their final move. With today marking his month’s mind, his brother Seán Carey said the family are still coming to terms with the devastating loss.

They set up a GoFundMe page to provide financial help to Paul’s widow and children, who have now returned to Patrickswell, where he is from.

‘It’s still a blow, being honest about i t, but unfortunately, Anna, his wife, she’s not earning and she has a five-year-old son and a baby on the way in February,’ Seán told the Irish Daily Mail. We are always going to be there for her emotionally, but I suppose in the short-term, we just want to try to get something for her to give her a little step up and tide her over.

‘The legal stuff here, the legal stuff in UAE, all the stuff you don’t really talk about, that has to be done and ironed out.’

The entire family are still coming to terms with the death.

‘It gets better but its nearly day by day to be honest with you, it was just a shocking turn of events for all of us. Whenever I’m feeling sorry for myself, I just think of her and the little boy, Fionn.’ He said the community in Limerick provided huge support, and the Irish in Dubai ‘kicked it out of the park’ in the immediate aftermath of the accident, as they rallied around the family.

‘He died on a Friday and the next flight home was on the Wednesday, and can you believe it, he was on that flight… it made the process that bit easier, we had less suffering on that front.’

Seán also thanked the GAA community, at home and abroad, for their support, as the Carey family has long been involved in Limerick GAA. He described his nephew Cian Lynch as not only a fantastic hurler, but an ‘incredible human being’. ‘He got man of the match in the Munster final, only a few weeks after Paul died. He’s a saint, that man… he just encapsulates Paul,’ he said, adding that the match is giving them something to look forward to.
