WICKLOW HIT WITH €10K IN FINES FOR TRAVEL BREACH IN ONE DAY

-

GARDAÍ handed out more than €10,000 in Covid-19 travel fines in a single county in just one day.

The fines of €100 each, were issued to more than 100 drivers on Saturday.

The fines were for breaching the 5km radius travel rule and during the course of the day more than 200 drivers were turned back from Co. Wicklow with cautions over the rule.

The Garda Wicklow Division said: ‘An Garda Síochána has repeatedly appealed to people to adhere to public health regulations and not to travel beyond 5km of their homes.

‘An Garda Síochána has repeatedly advised people not to park illegally at public amenities as it could hinder access by emergency services.

‘While vast majority of public are compliant there still appears to be people who don’t want to take that advice.

‘On Saturday gardaí in the Wicklow Division issued over 100 fixed charged notices and turned back 200+ vehicles after issuing a caution to the drivers.

‘Gardaí will again be on duty today supporting the Covid-19 regulations and helping protect our frontline hospital staff and the wider community.’
