Biden tees up ten-day blitz of Trump legacy
JOE Biden will tear up Donald Trump’s most controversial policies as soon as he enters the White House this week.
The president-elect is to launch a ten-day blitz that will include rejoining the Paris climate agreement and ending a ban on immigrants from some Muslim countries.
He will also order mask wearing in government buildings and introduce laws to help millions of illegal immigrants gain citizenship.
The details were revealed by new chief of staff Ron Klain ahead of Mr Biden’s inauguration in Washington on Wednesday.
Mr Biden will force through some of his agenda using executive orders, a tool often wielded by Mr Trump to speed things up.
He has also pledged to deliver 100million coronavirus vaccines in his first 100 days.
Other actions include measures designed to help those struggling during the pandemic. He has already outlined a $1.9trillion relief bill which includes payments of $1,400 to many Americans.
Mr Klain said in the memo to staff: ‘President-elect Biden will take action not just to reverse the gravest damages of the Trump administration but also to start moving our country forward.’
Incoming presidents traditionally move swiftly to sign executive actions when they take office.
Mr Trump did the same but he found many of his orders challenged and rejected by courts.
Mr Biden will have to juggle his agenda with the impeachment trial of Mr Trump, who is accused of inciting the mob which stormed the Capitol on January 6. It could start as soon as this week.
More than 20,000 National Guard troops have been deployed in Washington ahead of the inauguration ceremony.
There are fears of further unrest from pro-Trump extremists.
The National Mall, normally packed with crowds for inaugurations, has been sealed off.
On Friday night a man with a loaded handgun and more than 500 rounds of ammunition was arrested at a security checkpoint.
Another man was arrested yesterday for carrying a ‘clearly visible’ firearm near the Capitol.
