Thomas slur could prompt more financial hits
JUSTIN THOMAS will hope that no other sponsors follow suit after Ralph Lauren terminated their career-long agreement after the American’s use of a homophobic slur. Thomas, 27, apologised after comments at the Tournament of Champions were picked up by a microphone but that was not enough for the clothing giants. And it could be the start of a financial nightmare for the world No 3 if others pull the plug. Ralph Lauren also sponsor the US Ryder Cup team, which could see the former world No 1 back in their kit later this year. ‘We believe in the dignity of all people, regardless of age, race, gender identity, ethnicity, political affiliation or sexual orientation,’ the company said in a statement. ‘While we acknowledge he has apologised and recognises the severity of his words, he is a paid ambassador of our brand and his actions conflict with the inclusive culture that we strive to uphold.’ Thomas had told the Golf Channel: ‘There’s just no excuse. I’m an adult. There’s absolutely no reason for me to say anything like that. It’s terrible.’
