LOI season could come down to points ratio

- By PHILIP QUINN

THE final positions in this year’s SSE Airtricity League of Ireland could be decided on a points-per-game ratio if the season isn’t completed. The emergency measure is one of the conditions attached to special Covid-19 Rules which FAI CEO Jonte Hill will discuss with clubs on a conference call this morning. The FAI’s roadmap for 2021, ahead of the scheduled kickoff of the Centenary season on March 19, was compiled with UEFA guidance. The proposals include reducing the 36-game Premier Division season to 27 games if four or more series of games have not been played by May 31.

If Covid-19 impacts further, there will be contingencies in place for another 18-game season, like 2020, when Shamrock Rovers completed it unbeaten and were crowned champions. The document presented to the clubs states: ‘All clubs must fulfil 18 fixtures as the minimum amount required to deem the season to be complete, in both the Premier and First Division. ‘If there are less than 18 games played in the 2021 Premier Division and the season is not completed, the European places (teams placed 1st – 3rd or 4th if no FAI Cup completed) will be decided on an average

points-per-game basis. ‘Promotion and relegation will not occur in either the Premier or First Divisions, and all teams will remain in the same division for the 2022 season. ‘In the event of matters progressing as per above, prize money for the Premier Division will then be split evenly amongst the 10 teams. ‘If there are less than 18 games played in the 2021 First Division, prize money for the First Division will be split evenly amongst the teams.’ The National League Executive Committee (NLEC) will reserve the right to reduce the number of fixtures to ensure the season is completed by November 30. ‘Completing the season as planned through the optimum scheduling of matches is of paramount importance. But there is provision to extend beyond that date under ‘extraordinary circumstances.’ Clarity on the interference of Covid-19 is required after last season’s uncertainty which followed postponements involving five clubs. Where Covid-19 strikes, clubs risk forfeiting games 3-0.

Once clubs have 14 fit registered players, including their U19s, one of whom being a goalkeeper, games must be played. If necessary, neutral venues will be used for games. There is no mention of funding for the clubs in the document although it’s acknowledged the season ‘is progressing against a background of difficulties’ due to the pandemic. Clubs will seek assurances from Hill regarding financial assistance while waiting for the go-ahead for fans to return at some point during the season. While clubs reckon at least €6m will be required to make ends meet, around half of that is expected to be made available. Hill’s video call with clubs today will also embrace financial, commercial and streaming issues, as well as the under-age leagues and transfer deadlines.
