Salon boss arrest after opening

- By Ronan Smyth

A BEAUTY salon owner has appeared in court after being charged with breaching coronavirus legislation.

Christine McTiernan, 48, who owns the C&N Beauty Rooms on Dublin Street, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, opened for the second day in a row yesterday.

She was arrested a short time later and appeared before Swords District Court yesterday afternoon, charged under the Health Act for opening her business.

She was released on bail to appear before Balbriggan District Court on March 25. Another seven people were arrested at the scene as activists turned up to support her. Earlier this week, the salon owner told Newstalk: ‘I am taking a stand on my behalf. This is for me. I have to do what I have to do to pay my bills and that is what is important to me.’ In a sign on the shop window, she insisted she has a constitutional right to provide for her family.

In videos posted online, a large Garda presence could be seen outside the salon as well as several patrol cars. Gardaí said a total of seven people were arrested and one woman was charged. A spokesman said: ‘Gardaí arrested a woman, aged in her 40s, in Balbriggan this morning for breaches of the Health Act 1947 as amended.

‘Gardaí are also investigating a demonstration that was held in Balbriggan. Seven persons were arrested in relation to this demonstration and associated breaches of the Health Act (four men and three women). Six of these were dealt with by way of Fixed Penalty Notice. The other person arrested, a man aged in his 50s, has been charged in relation to this incident.’
