Irish girl, 16, dies after falling from wall in Spain

- By Louise Burne

A 16-YEAR-OLD Irish girl has died after falling from a five-metre wall in southern Spain while taking part in a foreign exchange programme.

The teenager, who is believed to have attended a private school in south Co. Dublin, fell from the wall in Granada, Andalucia, on Friday, March 19.

It has been suggested that the young girl has been partaking in an exchange programme in the Spanish city at the time of her death.

A local newspaper, Ideal, reported that the girl suffered multiple facial and head injuries when she fell from the wall.

It is believed that she fell around 16 feet, or five metres.

The news outlet reported that the city’s councillor for public safety said that the teenager was with friends and returning from a ‘botellón’ street gathering when the incident occurred.

She had been attending the event near the Avellano fountain and was walking home at around 10pm local time when the fall occurred.

It is understood that the Irish teenager was out socialising with friends to celebrate Granada’s decision to lift some of its Covid-19 restrictions.

One of the changes to the rules was the extension of the region’s curfew to 11pm.

Emergency services treated the girl at the scene after her friends urgently alerted passersby. She was later rushed to the intensive care unit at the Hospital de Neurotraumatología.

It is believed that police are investigating how the incident occurred and are examining whether the fall was caused by the uneven surface around the foundation or if the Irish teenager fell because it was dark.

It has also been suggested that two other young people were injured at the same location in Granada over the last number of weeks.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to the Irish Daily Mail that it is aware of the case and is ‘providing consular assistance’ following the teenage girl’s death.
