A sombre ceremony at Shay funeral as famous faces mourn TV star

EUROVISION songwriter Shay Healy was laid to rest yesterday in Dublin in front of a small number of family and friends – with hundreds watching online.

Healy, who was an RTÉ broadcaste­r and Irish Daily Mail columnist, had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease since 2004.

He died last week in St Vincent’s Hospital at the age of 78.

In attendance at the funeral was Riverdance producer John McColgan, entertaine­r Twink, as well as Mr Healy’s long-time friend and collaborat­or Paul Brady. The funeral took place in the Victoria Chapel in Mount Jerome in south Dublin.

Healy is predecease­d by his wife Dympna, who died in 2017.

He is survived by his two sons Oisín and Fionán, his five siblings, and six grandchild­ren.

The musician was best known as the host of RTÉ chat show Nighthawks from 1988 to 1992, and as the composer of Ireland’s Eurovision entry What’s Another Year, performed by Johnny Logan.
