Drop of 7,300 in PUPs

THERE have been over 421,000 Pandemic Unemployment Payments (PUP) in the last week, with 7,300 people closing their claim.

The payments are valued at €125.52million. Liz Canavan, assistant general secretary at the Department of the Taoiseach, said almost 6,000 of those who closed claims stated they were doing so because they had returned to work.

Accommodation and food is the sector with the largest number of recipients, followed by the wholesale and retail trade, and construction.

However, it is expected the number of recipients in the construction industry will fall next week, as up to 20,000 are returning to work on housing and childcare projects following the lifting of restrictions.
