AMERICA IS NO UTOPIA
AN American woman flying into Dublin, keen to avoid the mandatory hotel quarantine, told yesterday’s Irish Daily Mail that ‘in the US, there would be [a] public outcry if this was introduced’. So what? In Ireland, there would be a public outcry if a president suggested injecting bathroom bleach as a cure for Covid. There would be a public outcry if children in school were shot dead by fellow pupils every other week. There would be a public outcry if gardaí systemically targeted one group for brutal treatment based solely on racial profiling. There would be a public outcry if migrant children arriving into the country were separated from their parents and put in cages. Adults in hotel rooms for ten days as a necessary public health measure, not so much – and rightly so.
