Moment it all sank in for pained Charles and Camilla...

- By Rebecca English

EMOTION etched on his face, it’s clear that the past week has taken its toll on Prince Charles as he grieves for his late father, Prince Philip.

Charles, accompanied by his wife Camilla, appeared close to tears yesterday as he toured a sea of floral tributes – including a few quirky touches, such as a model Land Rover – left by the public in London.

Buckingham Palace had requested no flowers be laid, to discourage crowds and ensure Covid compliance. But thousands turned up to pay their respects, leaving bouquets, posies, cards, pictures and mementoes. Police have been gathering them up and taking them to the Commonwealth HQ at Marlborough House.

Charles, 72, had to choke back his emotions as he took in the outpouring of goodwill to the Duke. Wearing a black tie, with Camilla also in black, the prince walked up and down, stopping to read some of the messages. One read: ‘Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow. ‘You are in our prayers.’ Another said: ‘HRH A True Gentleman. Thank you for your devoted service to our country. We shall miss you.’
