THINK TWICE BEFORE CROSSING AOIBHINN

-

BROADCASTER and academic Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin is turning into something of a feminist avenger, waging a one-woman war on male privilege, sexual harassment and casual misogyny. Last year, she revealed she’d been harassed and intimidated for years by a colleague in UCD, who’d barge into her office, angrily demand she date him and bombard her with calls and emails, leaving her in constant fear.

She eventually involved the Gardaí and initially kept her name out of the case, but later decided to go public to encourage other harassed women to speak up. And they’ve certainly got a role model in Aoibhinn, who this week revealed she’d tackled a lone male driver for parking in a family space at the supermarket, only to be told to ‘give us a kiss, you look lovely’. Big mistake, as Julia Roberts says in Pretty Woman, huge: Aoibhinn called out his selfishness and misogyny on Twitter and other shoppers thanked her for challenging him.

At the very least, that man will think twice before hogging a family parking space, for fear Aoibhinn the Avenger is lurking nearby. Be afraid, entitled and arrogant male drivers (the kind who also park in disabled spaces), be very afraid.
