Nurses: We want talks on bonuses
THE Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has said it wants negotiations with the Government on bonuses and extra holiday leave for members for work done during the pandemic.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly previously said healthcare staff should get a bonus for their efforts during the Covid-19 crisis but the INMO yesterday said a firm offer was yet to be made.
The union now says the matter must go to the Labour Court.
‘I think everybody understands the great work that has been carried out. In fact, it was acknowledged by the employer and they have said quite categorically to us that there will be compensation,’ INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha told RTÉ radio yesterday.
‘Our difficulty is that commitment doesn’t involve any negotiation.
‘Right now we’re very concerned because they are saying to us there will be compensation for qualified workers in the autumn but, as most people know, we’re constantly in a battle to recruit and to keep our new graduates.
‘They will be deciding right now whether they stay or go.’
Ms Ni Sheaghdha pointed to France where health workers have been paid an extra €1,500 as a reward for their efforts, while in November last year, the Scottish government announced a £500 (€585) one-time payment to health and social care staff.
Similar bonuses were also awarded
‘They said there will be compensation’
in Wales and Northern Ireland this year.
In a statement, the HSE said: ‘We have been advised that it is intended to address the recognition issue with regard to frontline workers in the autumn.
‘We are not in a position to preempt any Government decision in advance of its consideration.’
