Batman’s boy wonder Robin comes out as bisexual in DC comic

- By Archie Mitchell

FOR decades he has been the faithful young partner helping Batman vanquish enemies such as Joker and The Riddler.

But now Robin has shown he’s very much his own man – by coming out as bisexual.

For, in the latest edition of the comic Batman: Urban Legends, the Caped Crusader’s sidekick agrees to go on a date with another young man.

This Robin is not the one older fans may remember from the classic 1960s TV series or the subsequent films. Nor the one played by Chris O’Donnell, who is seduced by Poison Ivy in the 1997 film Batman & Robin. Instead, he is the alter-ego of Tim Drake, a successor to the original ‘boy wonder’ Dick Grayson – nephew of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Drake discovers the identities of Batman and the second Robin, Jason Todd, who succeeded Grayson but dies, and is enlisted as the sidekick aged 13.

His Robin has previously dated women but fans have long suspected he may be gay or bisexual. In the latest DC Comics storyline, he is asked to go on a date by Bernard Dowd, whom he has just been fighting alongside in a brawl. Drake says he has had a ‘lightbulb moment’ and replies: ‘Yeah, I think I want that.’

The story ends on a cliffhanger, leaving fans to wait until the next edition in December to see how the relationship develops. Many readers were elated that Robin had come out. One tweeted that the revelation was ‘so big’, adding: ‘Tim Drake’s Robin is so iconic... and he’s bi.’

Another said: ‘Tim Drake finally coming out is so inspiring, DC never wanted a queer Robin but after years and years of campaigning from writers and fans it finally happened. It’s so well written, I and a lot of LGBTQ+ people can relate to having the “lightbulb moment”.’

Another key character, Batwoman, was revealed to be a lesbian 15 years ago. And in March, Marvel unveiled the first gay Captain America. news@dailymail.ie
