New tell-all book reveals Trump’s ‘fury’ over Melania jacket stunt
FORMER US president Donald Trump exploded at his wife in the Oval Office after she wore a jacket emblazoned with the words ‘I really don’t care, do you?’ during a visit to meet with child migrants in Texas, according to a new book.
Stephanie Grisham, formerly the top aide to the then first lady and briefly the president’s press secretary, wrote that Mr Trump berated his wife over the controversial jacket, yelling: ‘What the hell you were thinking?’
In a tell-all book out next week, Ms Grisham reveals that she had not noticed the message scrawled across the back of the former first lady’s jacket, which sparked widespread speculation over what statement Melania was trying to make.
It was never made clear why the former president’s wife ordered the $39 Zara jacket to wear to the border.
Ms Grisham only reveals that Mr Trump himself came up with the cover story, ordering an aide to tweet that the target of his wife’s message was the ‘fake news media’ and not himself or migrant children separated from their parents.
The former president has already released a statement trying to discredit Ms Grisham’s account. Mr Trump said that ‘Stephanie didn’t have what it takes and that was obvious from the very beginning’.
He accused her of becoming ‘very angry and bitter’. Melania’s office has also been critical of her former staffer’s memoir.
‘The intent behind this book is obvious,’ her office told The Washington Post.
‘It is an attempt to redeem herself after a poor performance as press secretary, failed personal relationships, and unprofessional behaviour. Through mistruth and betrayal, she seeks to gain relevance and money at the expense of Ms Trump.’
