Prendergast to join Munster ticket

- By MARTIN HEALY

GRAHAM Rowntree’s

backroom team at Munster continues to take shape with Mike Prendergast set for a return to the province.

Rowntree will take on the head coach job in the summer when Johann van Graan departs the post to take charge at Bath.

The former England international is already believed to have Denis Leamy from Leinster lined up to come on board as defence coach for next season.

Prendergast will form part of the coaching ticket with the former scrum-half expected to step in as assistant coach.

According to Midi Olympique in France, Prendergast will swap Racing 92 for the province where he enjoyed two spells as a player.

The 44-year-old has been living in France since 2013 when he first joined as the skills coach at Grenoble.

Following spells with Oyonnax and Stade Francais, Prendergast joined forces with Racing 92 in 2019 and was part of the coaching team that led the club to a European title the following year.

Prendergast spent five years with Munster up to 2006 before going overseas to work with Bourgoin followed by Gloucester.

He returned in 2008 for one final season with the Limerick outfit before turning his attention to coaching.

Speaking to the French outlet, he said his decision to move back home is based on a ‘family choice’.

‘I have been really happy at Racing, I have an excellent relationship with Laurent Travers and Jacky Lorenzetti, but some family matters are pushing me today to return,’ the coach stated.

‘In the meantime, I hope that we will have a great end to the season and that we will (bring) a title to this club.’
