SCANTY DRESS WAS A LIL’ BIT NEGLECTED

-

GOD be with the days when a comely woman in a dress held together by safety pins could cause a worldwide fashion sensation, make an overnight star out of the said comely lady and totally outshine the bigger names on the red carpet that night. That was Liz Hurley, then just Hugh Grant’s plusone at the premier of Four Weddings… in 1994. Heaven knows what an actress would have to wear – or not wear – to make such headlines today, but when actress Lily James, left, wore a scantier, shorter safety-pin dress to the New York Met Ball this week, she

barely merited a mention, and only then because it was significantly more substantial than the string onion bag she’d worn earlier in the evening. Ironically, given the outrageous frocks on display at the ball, the outfit that made the biggest headlines this week was a very modest, high-necked, mid-length black and white dress worn by a Spanish disability worker when she accepted an award from Queen Letizia of Spain… because both women turned up in the very same one. And, in contrast to the small fortunes that the British royals spend on clothes, it cost €70.
