Students show the write stuff at awards for young journalists
THE most talented young reporters in the country have been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
The winners of the NewsBrands Ireland Press Pass student journalism competition were announced yesterday – with prizes presented for news writing, features, opinion, sports journalism, photojournalism and best school newspaper.
Kate Lynch, from The Institute of Education, was named the overall Student Journalist of the Year for her feature, which included an interview with the new Trinity Provost.
Michael Foley, chairman of the Press Pass judging panel said: ‘The writer clearly understood that a great interview is more than getting answers, but is also those small details or observations that can bring a subject alive.’
The event was attended by the award-winning pupils and their teachers and families, along with national newspaper editors and journalists.
Press Pass is a Transition Year student journalism and news literacy programme which has been run by NewsBrands Ireland since 2012. More than 10,000 transition year students took part in the annual competition, with 19 prizes awarded to recognise their original journalism.
Special guest was Media Minister Catherine Martin.
‘I have nothing but admiration for the work you have all put into the programme. The subject matters you have chosen to focus on are diverse, interesting and topical,’ she said.
‘I’m absolutely confident that your generation will be one of innovation and trendsetters,’ she added.
