‘It’s shameful for a semi-final’

- JAMES MURRAY

LA ROCHELLE boss Ronan O’Gara has hit out at the venue for tomorrow’s Champions Cup semi-final clash with Racing 91, calling the decision to switch from Paris to Lens ‘shameful’.

The match was moved from Racing’s La Defense Arena home because of a concert and former Ireland out-half O’Gara is not impressed ahead of tomorrow afternoon’s kick-off.

‘Unfortunately, this time, the stands are going to be a bit empty,’ said O’Gara (right) yesterday.

‘I think it’s shameful for a semi-final. But we have to accept the decision to be there for the match.

‘I feel sorry for the supporters, it’s a seven-hour drive from La Rochelle to Lens, it’s not easy to get there on a Sunday at 4pm (3pm Irish time). There isn’t really a flight either, I know because my wife tried to find one and couldn’t. But it’s something we can’t control.’

Neither La Rochelle nor Racing have ever won the competition, although both teams have made the final previously, and O’Gara feels the team has developed and is ready to take the last step.

‘After three seasons, I have seen this team evolve,’ said O’Gara.

‘The squad has matured with regard to how to approach these big knockout matches.

‘We are well armed now and it is a real pleasure to work with these players. As I said they are more mature but also more united and above all well aware of their strengths and weaknesses.

‘We have today amazing leaders who are capable clearly of going further in this competition. I have a lot of pride in this squad.

‘We lost in the final last year but the past does not interest me. I’d like to think we will be in the final and be last man standing.’
