Tribeswomen see off Mayo to claim crown

- By ALAN MORRISSEY

GALWAY have successfully retained the TG4 Connacht senior ladies football championship by beating Mayo 1-12 to 1-8 at Tuam Stadium yesterday. Substitute Lynsey Noone’s goal on 42 minutes proved crucial as it stretched the hosts’ advantage to seven points before Mayo rallied. Michael Moyles’ Mayo were given a glimmer of hope

when Éilis Ronayne and the returning Rachel Kearns set up Lisa Cafferky, who found the net. It started Mayo’s best spell as Tamara O’Connor, Shauna Howley and Sinéad Cafferky brought the deficit back to two points with eight minutes remaining but that was as close as they got. Elsewhere, Cork saw off Waterford in the Munster championship semi-final, securing a 4-10 to 1-12 victory in Fraher Field, Dungarvan. Waterford’s previous meeting ended in a three-point Lidl National League victory for

Shane Ronayne’s in March. The Rebels were far more clinical this time around with Áine Terry O’Sullivan netting twice and Melissa Duggan and Eimear Scally also getting in on the goalscoring act. Kerry will be a tougher proposition in the Munster final but Cork can be pleased with their efforts.
