LIFE & BETH, DISNEY+
AMY SCHUMER (pictured) made her name in comedy, but she’s been leaning more into drama of late – see last year’s claustrophobic movie The Humans for evidence of that. This new series fits someone who can do both, which makes sense as Schumer not only stars in it, but wrote and directed it, too. Beth (Schumer) is a thirtysomething Manhattan wine distributor, who drinks to ignore her disappointing life and even more disappointing boyfriend, until – in the first of this steadily building ten-parter – some tragic news hits her like a sledgehammer. Watch her face in that moment, when she’s forced to sing karaoke while dealing with something awful; it’s terrific acting, in what is a nuanced, heartfelt and often very funny comedy drama. Forced to confront her past, Beth leaves her seemingly enviable life in the big city and heads back to her childhood home of Long Island, where she makes a connection with an eccentric farmer (Michael Cera) and attempts to rebuild her relationship with her father
(Michael Rapaport).
