DAS BOOT, SKY/NOW

-

THE 1981 Second World War movie Das Boot was nominated for six Oscars, and has remained a high-water mark in the genre ever since. Based on a 1973 book by war correspondent LotharGunther Buchheim, the film’s U-boat story was set in 1941, and Sky’s subtitled drama series picks up the tale in 1942 as, after the cracking of the Enigma code, the tide of the war starts to turn against the Nazi submarines. When it hit TV screens in 2018, any concern that the show would sully the memory of Wolfgang Petersen’s film vanished. This is drama of the highest order, presenting a poignant portrait of the war at sea for submariners — such as Oberleutnant Ehrenberg (Franz Dinda, near right) — as well as for those at home and in the French Resistance. Das Boot made an explosive return on Sunday, opening with a brutal battle against an obsessive Royal Navy commander (Ray Stevenson), while in Lisbon, Gestapo officer Hagen Forster (Tom Wlaschiha, far right) is on the trail of a hoard of stolen gold. While it’s showing weekly on Sky Atlantic on Sundays, the new, third series is available in its entirety on Sky On Demand and Now, along with the first two seasons.
