Derry’s hopes damaged after Hoban’s late Lilies winner

-

DERRY CITY’S title hopes were dealt a blow last night as Pat Hoban’s late goal gave Dundalk a 2-1 win at Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. With Shamrock Rovers winning the previous night at UCD, it was imperative that Derry keep up the pace. However, they were rocked after 10 minutes when Robbie Benson opened the scoring with a superb long range effort. Derry brought James Akintunde on in the 65th minute and the move paid dividends ten minutes later with a close range header. But Dundalk were not to be denied and Hoban secured the points with eight minutes to go. Bohemians jumped into fifth spot after they beat Sligo Rovers 2-1 at Dalymount Park. Dawson Devoy struck first for Bohs with 61 minutes gone before Junior OgediUzokwe added a second 15 minutes later. Sligo still made a game of it and Adam McDonnell’s goal in the 86th minute ensured it was to be a nervy ending for the home side but they held out. Elsewhere, Drogheda United beat Finn Harps 3-1 at Head In The Game Park. Conor Tourish put Harps ahead early in the second half but Drogheda responded with goals from Evan Weir, Adam Foley and Darragh Nugent.
