Garda inquiry into critically ill nine-week-old baby’s injuries

- By Ian Begley

GARDAÍ are investigating whether a nine-week-old baby, who is fighting for her life in hospital, was injured deliberately.

The baby girl remains in a critical condition at Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin after an incident at a house in Co. Louth.

Medical staff were informed the child ‘fell down the stairs’ but officers are investigating if this is the case.

At this stage officers do not believe the baby’s injuries were sustained accidentally.

A source said: ‘Her injuries remain unexplained and warranted a Garda investigation. However, the investigation is at a very early stage and gardaí must examine all circumstances surrounding this incident.’

Gardaí are in the process of interviewing the baby’s relations.

The tot was rushed to hospital after gardaí and emergency services were alerted by family members.

In a statement Tusla, the child and family agency, said: ‘Any trauma or injury to a child is very difficult for the family and community. However, it’s not appropriate for Tusla to comment at this time while all the facts are not known.’

A Garda spokesman said: ‘Gardaí in Drogheda are investigating all the circumstances which led to an infant being admitted to Temple Street hospital on September 13.’
