PICK OF THE DAY

THE ISLAND, 6.30PM, RTÉ ONE

-

THE opening episode of this series exploring the geological history of Ireland focused on the formation of the island and how two ancient continents swallowed an ocean as they slowly approached each other over millions of years. The collision point where they crashed eventually become Ireland. Now, in the second instalment, Liz Bonnin (pictured) and her team of experts explore the role ice and water played in forming the country. At Killary Fjord, there’s a look at the bulldozing power of glaciers which, over the course of thousands-of-years cycles of formidable ice ages, both eroded and shaped the island. Then we leave our own shores to head to Norway to see how ice continues to carve and mould landscapes.
