Five men held following assault on tragic Dylan during night out

- By Ian Begley

FIVE men in their twenties have been arrested by gardaí investigating the death of Limerick man Dylan McCarthy following an assault in Monasterevin, Co. Kildare.

Mr McCarthy, 29, from Kilmallock, Co. Limerick, was found unconscious outside a pub in the small town on the night of August 21.

He had been celebrating the birth of his sister’s baby with family and friends at the time.

Dylan was found unresponsive at the scene and died at Tallaght Hospital in Dublin the following day.

Gardaí confirmed yesterday morning that five young men were arrested as part of their investigations. A spokesman said: ‘The men, all aged in their 20s, are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at multiple Garda stations in Co. Kildare.’

It is understood a fight broke out between groups of people leaving the pub shortly after midnight on the night in question.

It is alleged that Mr McCarthy was beaten and assaulted in what gardaí say was a sustained attack by several men.

His father, Eamonn, was also assaulted at the pub and suffered significant facial injuries.

Mr McCarthy, who had recently moved to Cork, was initially put on life support, but died hours later.

He is survived by his parents Eamonn and Marita, sister Orla and partner Aoife. Hundreds of mourners attended his funeral Mass last month, where he was described as a ‘gentle soul’.

Mr McCarthy was a devoted member of Kilmallock GAA Club and was well known around the community for his love of sport.

A club spokesman said previously: ‘Our hearts are broken. Everyone is affected as Dylan was one of life’s gentlemen so for something like this to happen is just shocking.’

Investigating gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident to contact them.
