Shocking rise in abandoned pups

- By Philip Downes

MORE than 100 puppies have arrived on the doorstep of dog rescue facility Madra this year.

The charity, which stands for Mutts Anonymous Dog Rescue and Adoption, said that of the 109 puppies that have been surrendered, 61 have arrived since October.

On social media, the charity introduced the latest arrivals – Ashi, Yuki, Tashi and Kiki – saying that the pups received a warm welcome.

‘Today, on the shortest day of the year, the 21st of December, we welcomed the 21st litter of puppies this year. That’s 109 babies, 61 of which came to us in the last two months... and the year isn’t over yet!’

Madra added that those who wish to adopt a puppy can join their adoption waiting list, before posting a second update on one of the litters that was diagnosed with ‘puppy strangles’, or juvenile cellulitis.

Madra’s appeal comes as fellow dog adoption charity Dogs Trust issued an emotional appeal for people to consider the lifelong commitment when adopting a dog, after one animal with severe injuries was rescued.

The charity found a two-year-old lurcher named Carmel abandoned in Dublin with ‘shocking’ injuries – including being so emaciated and dehydrated that she risked losing her right hind leg.

After being brought to their rehoming centre in Finglas, Dublin, Carmel had to have some of her toes amputated – but managed to keep her four legs and has begun walking again.

‘Carmel’s condition was shocking,’ said Niamh Curran-Kelly, veterinary and welfare manager at Dogs Trust.

‘It’s so upsetting to think of what she went through and the pain she was in before she arrived into our care. Her injuries were so bad, it was difficult to look at them.

‘Thankfully, we were able to get her the urgent veterinary treatment she needed,’ Ms Curran-Kelly said.

‘Carmel still has a long way to go, so we aren’t looking for a home for her just yet, but we are very happy with how she is progressing. Now that she’s no longer in so much pain, it’s wonderful to see her sweet and happy personality shine through,’ she said.
