Foo Fighter Dave’s Dublin wine Nirvana
FOO Fighters star Dave Grohl has enjoyed a night out at a trendy Dublin restaurant, sampling fine wines with an estimated value of €2,500.
Luca De Marzio, owner of the family-run Italian restaurant Rosa Madre in Temple Bar, described the singer ‘as an absolute gentleman’.
Mr De Marzio, who is from Rome but has been living in Ireland for ten years, admitted he was shocked when he saw the world-famous singer arrive for dinner on Thursday night with three friends, including Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel.
‘It was late on a very busy night and I thought I might not have a table for him but luckily one of the tables finished early,’ Mr De Marzio said.
Mr De Marzio said the singer shares his passion for wine which is why the restaurant owner invited him for a tour of his wine cellar.
‘First of all, he loved the pasta, which my wife makes in our own pasta factory so that was great,’ said Mr De Marzio. ‘In my opinion, he was not trying to show off by buying wine but because he has a real passion for wine. At one point I showed him the wine cellar. Not all of his party was drinking and they even left some wine for the staff,’ he said. ‘He is a cool guy who spent the whole night smiling. He was an absolute gentleman.’ At the end of the night, the former Nirvana drummer posed for pictures with Mr De Marzio before settling his substantial bill.
Mr De Marzio refused to say how much the wine Grohl bought cost but it is thought to have cost more than €2,500.
A bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1996 can be bought online for close to €1,000, while a 1996 Chateau Haut-Brion costs close to €600. And an Italian red Sassicaia 1996 also costs in the region of €1,000.
Mr De Marzio posted pictures of the evening on his social media, saying of the Foo Fighters frontman: ‘He is very passionate about wines and was a pleasure to discuss wine experiences with him.’
