GARDAÍ are investigating one of Ireland’s biggest GAA stars for allegedly running a medical treatment scam that netted almost €1million.

A Garda spokesman last night confirmed to the Irish Daily Mail that they are investigating an alleged fraud in the east of the country.

The spokesman said he could not comment on any alleged sporting connection to the person involved.

The former player, who is a household name in Ireland, has reportedly come under suspicion in his locality in recent months.

The man allegedly told GAA supporters that he needed money for medical treatment. Many were allegedly told that the money would be returned.

It is understood that a number of people complained to gardaí after they were not repaid.

The Garda Economic Crime Bureau is leading the investigation after receiving several formal complaints.

It is alleged that a fraud occurred in 2021 and 2022.

One businessman from Co. Laois allegedly gave the man a six-figure sum, believing it would be repaid once the GAA player received his treatment.

Another person allegedly gave him a sum of €15,000.

In a brief statement, a Garda spokesman said that officers ‘in the eastern region have commenced an investigation into an alleged fraud’.
