Starsky and Hutch to screech back on to our TV screens... but this time as women

- By Kenzi Devine

SEVENTIES police show Starsky & Hutch is getting set for a 21st-century reboot with women taking over the title roles.

US TV network Fox aims to revive the hit series this year with two female detectives: Sasha Starsky and Nicole Hutchinson.

The original show ran for 93 episodes from 1975 to 1979 and was a ratings winner all over the world, with Paul Michael Glaser as Starsky, David Soul as Hutch and Antonio Fargas as their streetwise informer Huggy Bear.

The duo were famous for screeching around town in their red and white Ford Gran Torino, while Starsky was also known for his choice in cardigans with shawl collars.

A Hollywood film from 2004 starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as the two detectives was a box-office success.

The new female version has not yet been cast but Fox Entertainment this week confirmed that it is in the pipeline. The Hollywood Reporter says the duo will ‘solve crimes in the offbeat town of Desert City while staying true to their friendship, their awesomeness, and somehow also trying to unravel the mystery behind who sent their fathers to prison 15 years ago for a crime they didn’t commit’.

This latest showbusiness ‘gender flip’ follows the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters with Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, and 2018’s Ocean’s 8, which starred Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett.

The two original Starsky & Hutch leads are both now 79, while Antonio Fargas is 76.

David Soul also had a successful pop career in the 1970s, scoring hits with songs including Don’t Give Up On Us and Silver Lady.
