Rain in Spain? It’s 28C
SCENES on Benidorm Beach could be mistaken for a summer’s day, with swathes of sunbathers enjoying Spain’s January heatwave.
Temperatures this week reached the second highest on record, prompting fears about the impact of climate change.
One observatory in Murcia recorded 28.2C, according to Spain’s meteorological agency. Another saw the temperature peak at 28.5C – making Thursday the hottest January day on record for the last 38 years.
However, some expressed concern about the heatwave.
‘It’s nice for us now, but we don’t think it’s completely normal,’ German tourist Thorsten Petersen, 66, said in Madrid.

Back in Ireland, the weather will be certainly be calmer in the days ahead, but it still looks to be a bit of a washout, according to Met Éireann.
Today will see dry weather at first with bright or sunny spells.
However, cloud will build from the southwest in the late morning and afternoon with patchy rain and drizzle developing.
Highest temperatures of 8C to 11C are forecast, dipping between 6C and 9C in the evening.
Tomorrow will be largely dry with a mix of cloud and hazy, sunny spells at first and just a few spots of light rain or drizzle.
A band of rain will push in from the west later, slowly moving southeastwards with colder air following from the northwest.
It will be very mild with highest temperatures of 11C to 14C, though there will be a night of rain, heavy in places.
Monday will see rain in the morning with sunny spells following. However, the rain will linger in eastern parts for much of the day. Highest temperatures of just 5C to 8C are forecast.
Tuesday will be generally cloudy in the morning with outbreaks of rain. Through the day, the rain will clear eastwards, becoming largely dry. Highest temperatures of 5C to 8C are expected.
