Cillian wins the IFTA, but wife Yvonne was a shoe-in

- By Sarah Slater

IFTA BEST Actor winner Cillian Murphy’s wife Yvonne caught the eye of fans with her quirky footwear when she stepped out among the biggest names in Irish film and drama for the 21st Irish Film and Television Awards.

The awards – hosted by Emmywinning broadcaster Baz Ashmawy – took place in the Convention Centre Dublin on Saturday night.

Famously shy at red carpet events, Mr Murphy, 47, joined by his artist wife Yvonne McGuinness, slipped inside the venue without taking questions from reporters.

But it was 51-year-old Yvonne’s footwear that piqued the interest of fans, who likened them to fluffy ‘slippers’ on social media, while others gave their wholehearted approval, deeming them ‘hot’.

Sharon Horgan, who was nominated for best Lead Actress In A Drama category for Best Interests, told reporters she was ‘delighted to be back home for the IFTAs’.

Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson – nominated for her role in the musical comedy Flora and Son – said the night was a ‘huge moment’ for her.

But it was Dubliner Clare Dunne who came away with the gong for Lead Actress In A Drama – her third IFTA – for her role in Kin, which collected five awards including Best Drama. And Agnes O’Casey, great-granddaughter of playwright Sean O’Casey – won the IFTA for best Lead Actress In A Film for her role in Lies We Tell.

Also on the red carpet was Caitríona Balfe, nominated for Outlander. Stephen Rea, who was presented with the IFTA for Lifetime Achievement, said when arriving at the event: ‘I’m not very good at being the centre of attention. When you’re acting, you’re not yourself, and you fool them into thinking you are all right.’
