Oldest monk Glasto find
SKELETONS dating back 1,500 years are the oldest remains of monks found in the UK, say archaeologists.
Carbon dating revealed bones discovered at ancient Beckery Chapel, near Glastonbury, Somerset, were 5th or early 6th century.
Site director Dr Richard Brunning said: “It’s the earliest archaeological evidence for monasticism.”
Beckery, said to have been visited by King Arthur, was excavated in May by the South West Heritage Trust. The team found 50 to 60 skeletons, mostly adult men.
