- BY RYAN SMITH

A MAN killed in a car crash yesterday had survived cancer three times.

Ryan Mccaul, who was in his 30s, had also beaten meningitis twice and awoke from a month-long coma after a road smash more than a decade ago.

He died after a collision between a car and van on the main Derry to Belfast Road between Claudy and Dungiven shortly after 6am yesterday.

Sinn Fein councillor and relation Tony Mccaul told the Irish Mirror Ryan’s mother was inconsolable when he visited their home.

He said: “The family are in bits, they’re devastated.

“I couldn’t even speak to his mother as she was in such a bad state. She is just heartbroken.

“He beat cancer three times and ran a lot of marathons for cancer charities.

“He had a very tough life with everything that happened and it’s just tragic for the family and wider community.”

Ryan worked as a CAD technician with E&I Engineering Ltd in Burnfoot, Co Donegal.

He was from the Gortnaghey area of Co Derry and was just a few miles from his home when the crash occurred.

Police closed the road between Claudy and Dungiven and are appealing for witnesses.

Sinn Fein MLA Caoimhe Archibald also expressed her sincere sympathies to Ryan’s family.
