Eastenders’ Xmas of debt & depression

- BY ASHLEIGH RAINBIRD

EASTENDERS is to keep up its tradition of serving up Christmas misery as Lee Carter buckles under a tide of depression and debt.

The plot will focus on the marriage woes of Lee and Whitney, who remains oblivious as her husband refuses to talk about his agony.

Danny-boy Hatchard, 25, who plays Lee, told Radio Times: “His depression is going to escalate. It’s hardhitting for people to watch.

“I’ve had people writing saying the storyline has been unbearable because it’s like watching themselves.”

Danny, in the soap since 2014, will leave Albert Square when the story ends.

Eastenders’ festive gloom began in 1986 with Dirty Den serving divorce papers. In 1998 a car killed Tiffany Mitchell and in 2010 Ronnie Mitchell switched her dead baby for Kat Moon’s tot.
