HEARTBROKEN PALS TRIBUTE TO ‘GENTLE GIANT’ CRASH VICTIM

Tears for trio killed in fireball horror

- BY KATHY ARMSTRONG

HEARTBROKEN friends have paid tribute to a “gentle giant” killed in a fireball road crash.

Two of the victims of the collision, near Dungarvan in Co Waterford on Sunday, have been named locally as Eamon Dixon and Mikey Tobain.

Eamon, who was in his early 20s, and Mikey, who was in his 30s, died when the Volkswagen Golf they were travelling in exploded on impact.

Gardai and rescue services didn’t initially realise a third body was in the back of the gutted car. It is believed he was from Cork and was the vehicle owner. Officers said yesterday it may be several more days before they can be formally identified.

The family of six in the people carrier involved in the collision were taken to hospital. A man is still in intensive care in Cork University Hospital and his partner is serious but stable.

Two of the four children aged between six and 14 are also serious but stable.

Grief-stricken pals of the Dungarvan pair took to social media to pay tribute.

One said: “RIP Mikey Tobain. From your one true mate! And neighbour! True they don’t know how tight we were! We’re going to miss you mate!”

Another added: “He [Mikey] was a gentle giant, we just have to stay strong xx.”

Facebook group Kilgobinet, Co Waterford, also posted a poignant tribute. They wrote: “Thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and loved ones of the terrible car crash in our parish. Also the gardai, the emergency services, rescue helicopter and our own dear PP Fr Michael Kennedy who had such a hard, shocking and upsetting job to do.

“Hopefully the injured will make a full recovery, the bereaved will find comfort and those who died may have reached Heaven. Pray for them.”

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them in Dungarvan on 058 48600.
