Garda probe after man’s body found in apartment
Death of victim in his 40s ‘suspicious’
RESIDENTS of an apartment block where a man was found dead in “suspicious” circumstances told of their shock yesterday. Garda were last night trying to identify the deceased originally from Africa and believed to have been in his mid-40s. The remains were found in a flat in Waterford city at about 9.15am but it’s not clear if the man was a resident. Abdullaha Musa, who is also from Africa but has lived in the area for three years, said the death was “scary and sad”. He added: “Throughout the day, that’s all anyone was talking about.” Mr Musa said he heard suspicions were raised when the man failed to turn up for work. Christine Hearne told how she lived four doors away from where the body was found but didn’t know the occupant. “I only heard about it on Facebook, I didn’t hear anything this morning. It’s a bit scary. Sad anyway.” Another man living in the apartments, who didn’t know the victim, said a friend texted him about the news at about 10am, adding: “It’s a big shock.” The remains of the deceased, who is reported to have been Somalian, were taken out of the Wellington Square building just after 4.30pm. Specialist gardai carried out a forensic examination of the scene and officers confirmed they are treating the death as “suspicious”. Supt Chris Delaney said: “I’d ask anyone with information to contact our incident room here in Waterford.” A report was made to Waterford Garda station at 9.30am and emergency services attended the scene. State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is due to carry out a postmortem today at University Hospital Waterford.
