Triple murder probe at Lennon’s old flat

Mum & 2 kids killed, man held

- BY PAUL BYRNE

A KILLER left a mum and two children dead inside John Lennon’s former flat. Police found the bodies after neighbours heard a woman’s terrified screams. Officers were last night questioning a man of 30 discharged from hospital following treatment for illness after he was arrested on suspicion of murder. Detectives said: “It’s believed this is domestic-related and at the present stage we are not looking for anyone else over it.” The ground-floor Liverpool flat in a large Georgian Quarter terrace house is a stop on tours in The Beatles’ home city. Lennon lived in the flat – owned by band manager Brian Epstein – with first wife Cynthia soon after they wed in 1962. Its latest occupants are understood to have been a family of four – a man, a woman and their two children of toddler age. The victims and the arrested man are believed to originate from war-torn Yemen in the Middle East. A resident said: “I heard screams that make you go out to see what’s going on. “They were female screams – not ones of joy – and continuous. There was a scream like no other. It will stay with me for a while.” Police who were called to the flat on Tuesday evening evacuated nearby homes for fear of a possible gas leak. Neighbour Jeffrey Black, 52, said: “A man stood at the door on the pavement and a woman was outside screaming. “When kids are involved it’s very upsetting.” Beatles tour taxi driver Jay Riley, 67, said: “John wrote the song Do You Want To Know A Secret there because it was Brian Epstein’s secret flat.”
